LADAKH : popularly known as The Land of Numerous Passes and Mystic Lamas, broken moon and Last Shangri-La,
beckons Tourists to discover its winding rivers, glacier slops and shimmering Lakes bounded by two of the World's highest Mountain Ranges, The Greater Himalaya Ranges and The Karakoram, the altitude of Ladakh varies between 9000-14,000 Ft. above sea level.
Before Shimla convention between India & Pakistan, LADAKH comprised of three Districts, i.e., LEH, KARGIL and SKARDO but thereafter, the District of Skardo and a part of Kargil came under the Territory of Pakistan occupied Kashmir and LADAKH remained with Jammu & Kashmir State.
The People of Ladakh is inhabited by the people of Tibetto-Burman and Indo-Aryan descent with Buddhism being the dominant religion and Islam and Christianity being followed in same parts of Ladakh. Today Ladakh is known as a new Tourist destination as it called LAST SHANGRI-LA, especially for foreign tourist as many New Areas had been opened to foreign tourist since 1994 such as Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake and Tsomo Riri etc.
GENERAL INFORMATION :
Now Ladakh is accessible by both Air and Road. Till 2000 the Indian Airline has the monopoly, but luckily JET AIRWAYS has started their flight from 2001. However, during peak Season still there is congestion in Air Traffic due to heavy rush and those who wish to Travel by Air should plan their travel date well in advance. It will take only 1.15hrs. from Delhi-Leh. There are two overland routes, i.e., Srinagar Leh route and the Manali Leh route, but both the routes remain closed till end of June or early July.
CLIMATE : The temperature during Summer i.e., June to September would be around 15-25 degree C. with sunny days and no heavy rains.
PERMITS : Tourist don't need any permit to visit LEH, but all Foreigners require to be registered at Drass, Rumtse or Sarchu if they are
traveling by road. Those traveling by Air get themselves registered at the Airport on arrival, which normally the concerned travel agent will handle. Foreign Tourists are also require to obtain Permit and to pay Fees for all restricted areas which can obtain through registered Travel Agents. There are money exchange, Postal and Internet facilities available in Leh and hence it would be advisable to change your money before leaving Delhi or Leh otherwise there is no such facilities in remote areas.
